Formation of Particles with UWS Injection
The injection of urea water solution (UWS) for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) can lead to the formation of particles. However, the exact mechanism is still unknown. An investigation of this mechanism is urgently required in order to be able to assess the effects on the particulate emission (number, size distribution and composition) and to provide a basis for evaluation of possible measures to comply with future emission legislation.
The project is divided into two main work packages. Work package (WP) 1 focuses on on-line particle measurements at the engine test bench and on particle experiments. Both a diesel internal combustion engine (ICE) and a hydrogen ICE will be used for the experiments. In parallel, WP 2 will provide deeper insights through detailed chemical analyses of the samples and the compilation of all results in a descriptive model. Both aim at realistic test setups that allow a direct transfer to Euro 7/VII measurements.
The Chair for Thermodynamics of Mobile Energy Conversion Systems (TME) of the RWTH Aachen and the Institute for Occupational, Social and Environmental Medicine (IASU) of the University Hospital Aachen bring extensive experience to the project. TME covers the aspects of engine and exhaust aftertreatment, IASU the various chemical laboratory analyses.
